In honor of tonight's Oscars I've decided to post my own favorite movies of the past year. This is a totally irreverent list since none of them actually came out this year and since the categories are absolutely and totally made up but it's fun anyway.
First up, for the prize of Best Autobiography: "When Harry Met Sally"
Everything from the awkward smile, to the two sizes too large hair, to the fact that the Mister and I have gone through our own "when I first met him he was kissing my best friend" saga, this is definitely the autobiographical film of the year. (And yes, his ex and I are still fabulous friends. Saga does not always mean drama.)
I was introduced to this lovely story by the fine folks over at Dinner: A Love Story on this post. And though they do have amazing book reviews, and author interviews, and parenting info, the fact that "Dinner A Love Story Brussel Sprouts" comes up first when I type "D" into my Google search bar should tell you that these people know their food.
And they're funny. You should check them out.
BUT back to the Oscars... which, mid-post I have decided to call the "Paigies". {Oh yeah, that's me: bucking the system. Such a rebel.}
The Paigie for the Best Love Story goes to: "The Danish Poet"
Seriously guys, this short film costs less than the lunch you were planing on buying tomorrow. Cook in tonight, eat left-overs tomorrow, and invest in this movie. It's about fate and love and death and travel and creative inspiration... and it's even got a couple cows sprinkled in the mix.. which is good for my Arkansas soul.
Seriously, if this doesn't impress the socks off you... I will recommend another love story later. {smile}
The Paigie for Best Music goes to: "Amelie"
I first came to know about this movie through a totally unrelated short film that I clicked through to watch on Facebook once. The background music was credited to this movie so I listened to it here.
That piano that draws you in!!
And the sad violin!
Absolutely lovely.
I actually watched this during a sick day and I had feverish dreams in faux french and english subtitles all weekend. That was kind of freaky but if you're into quirky, funny, love stories (that you don't plan on watching with your kids or your parents) this is definitely one to see.
The Paigie for Best Guy Movie goes to: "Scott Pilgram vs The World"
I most definitely rolled my eyes when this movie was first suggested, but I, in my advanced young age, have come to realize that sometimes you have to say yes to the occasional "guy movie" so you feel a little less guilt pulling out anything that involves Sarah Jessica Parker, Katherine Heigl, or Julia Roberts.
But this guy movie was a pleasant surprise. Sure there were fight scenes galore and battle of the bands scene, but there's also a cute little love story. The video game effects ("You gained the power of true love!") were a cool bonus for a child of the 80's like myself.
